EPA Finalizes Ban on use of Methylene Chloride

On April 30, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency finalized a ban on most uses of methylene chloride. The chemical has been found to cause various forms of cancer, including cancers of the liver, lungs, brain, and blood.

Methylene chloride is a solvent commonly used in various manufacturing processes and is often used as a paint stripper, degreaser, and in the production of pharmaceuticals and plastics. Another prevalent use of methylene chloride in commercial applications is in manufacturing sealants and adhesives. This may include certain types of contact adhesives, contact cement, solvent welding adhesives, solvent-based adhesives, and two-part polyurethane cement.

The EPA's action may include a phase-out period to allow affected industries time to transition from using methylene chloride. Sealant and adhesive manufacturers may be required to reformulate their products or find alternative chemicals or processes.
